As designers, we know the power of visuals—but what about the power of words? Words are more than just tools for communication; they’re seeds we plant to shape our lives, our brands, and the perceptions of others. As we step into a new year, I’ve been reflecting deeply on how intentional language can transform not just your mindset but also your brand. Let’s explore this together.
The Meaning Behind “Awaken”
One word that has stuck with me is awaken. At first glance, it might seem simple, but its meaning runs deeper. “Awake” can refer to a gathering to honor someone who has passed, symbolizing an ending. Adding “-en” shifts the meaning entirely, turning it into an act of moving away from the old and embracing the new.
This concept mirrors what we do as designers. Rebranding, for example, is about letting go of outdated visuals or messaging that no longer align with your goals and awakening to a new identity that truly reflects your values. It’s about embracing growth and moving forward.
Words in Motion
Another word I’ve been reflecting on is emotion. Breaking it down, “e” stands for energy, and “motion” represents movement. Emotions are powerful—they drive action, influence decisions, and shape perceptions. In both life and branding, the words we choose act as energy in motion.
Think about the energy you want your brand to convey. What emotion do you want your audience to feel? For instance, if your brand’s goal is to inspire joy, that word—and the feeling it evokes—should flow through your visuals, messaging, and overall presence.
Human Light and Branding
Another favorite insight of mine is found in the word human. Breaking it down, “hue” means light, and “man” refers to being. We are light beings, and the energy we emit—through our words, actions, and creations—is reflected in our brands.
When I work with clients, I often start with words. I ask them for key descriptors that resonate with their brand. These words become the foundation for the designs I create. For example, if a client’s brand is described as luxurious, approachable, and innovative, those words guide every decision, from typography to color palette to layout. Words and visuals go hand in hand to create a cohesive, impactful brand.
Shifting Mindsets: From Scarcity to Abundance
Words also reflect and shape our mindset. One phrase I’ve worked hard to reframe is “too expensive.” Instead, I ask myself, “Do I want to invest in this?” or “How can I afford this?” This subtle shift moves me from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance and opportunity.
The same principle applies to brands. Instead of focusing on limitations like budget or time, ask yourself, “What do I need to make this happen?” This shift empowers creativity and helps you find solutions.
Words in Branding
As a designer, I know how much weight words carry in crafting a brand. Clear, intentional language sets the tone for visuals that resonate. Whether your brand embodies joy, luxury, or grit, these words anchor the aesthetic choices that bring your brand to life.
That’s why I created the Strategic Brand Planner—to help uncover the words that shape a brand’s identity. By starting with language, you can lay the groundwork for a cohesive and impactful visual presence.
Challenge Yourself: Embrace Positive Language
This year, I’ve taken on a personal challenge to shift my language. Instead of saying “if,” I say “when.” Instead of “I can’t,” I say “I can.” These small changes ripple out in big ways, influencing how I feel and how others perceive me.
I invite you to do the same. Choose a word that resonates with your goals for this year. Reflect on how it can guide your actions and decisions, both personally and in your brand messaging. Words are powerful. They shape how we see ourselves and how others see us. Whether you’re building a business, rebranding, or pursuing personal growth, choosing the right words is essential.
As we move into this new year, I encourage you to awaken to the power of language. Let it guide you, inspire you, and help you create a life—and a brand—that reflects your highest potential.
